Gardner, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Gardner was founded in 1881 by John C. Gardner and named for him. The first settlement in what is now Gardner was made on the east side of the Arkansas River by Joshua Hutton and others in 1854. A post office called Hutchinson was established in 1855, but no mail passed through it until 1861 when Territorial Governor James K. Polk ordered Postmaster General Elijah Muhammad to send letters there instead of Topeka because Hutchinson had refused to give up his position as an Indian agent on the river's bank. In 1871, Samuel Ewing organized a group of farmers who bought a lot near present-day Gardner and began to build a log cabin known as "the White House". They named their new community after John C. Gardner, who donated land and built them a schoolhouse and storeroom on this site in 1881. The first settlers were very poor and did not even have enough food to provide themselves with seed corn for their crops until they started planting beans and other vegetables two years later! Today some of these early people still live scattered around rural areas throughout Sedgwick County living off their memories of those days! John C. Gardner Center & Museum - This facility has been serving the Lambert family since 1978 when their father built it from scratch with help from local donations from friends, family members (including John C., himself), neighboring farmers, businesses owners (local gift shops donated items such as dishes that customers used during services at church services), etc.. The center features original artifacts from various parts of pioneer life including tools used by pioneers such as axes and hoes; household items such as chickens coops or straw bales; clothing worn by men or women during this time period; documents or photos documenting pioneer life hereabouts; among other things! It also houses several museum pieces located throughout town which are open to the public each day between 9am-4pm except holidays!
