One day whileisuiding through some cornfields near the Guthrie County line looking for an early morning meal when he happened upon a group of men laboriously cleaning up what turned out to be an abandoned mine shaft; this inspired him to initiate lifelong mining efforts on behalf of his community instead of going along with mainstream society's view that only surface Mining could provide economic stability within these developing communities during this time period (Ferguson 2006). This innovation led eventuallyto creation of both the current town square (based off topographical surveys taken during World War I) as well as many industry-related businesses such as numerous restaurants/cafes/bars along Keystone Avenue which sprang up due simplyto Junction City not being able to accommodate them; these days are still major employers within the local economy (Becker 2009). In 1982, Gardner became the seat of Cowley County after it was split off from Leavenworth County.
