The Gardner Massacre took place on July 20, 1876, when a group of men, women and children were killed by Union troops at the town of Gardner in Kansas. The event is considered one of the deadliest episodes in the history of the American West. Gardner was founded in 1867 by Alexander Gardner and his wife Elizabeth. The town grew rapidly due to its location along a wagon road between Wichita and Topeka. In 1868, Alexander Gardner migrated from Massachusetts to Kansas with his family to take advantage of the new statehood movement. When the US Civil War began, Alexander Gardner enlisted as a private in Company D, 3rd Ulysses S. Grant's Seventh Infantry Regiment. After three years of hard fighting in Missouri and Iowa, he was mustered out as a corporal on August 15, 1871. After the war ended,Alexander Gardner resumed farming with his two sons and started to increase their holdings even more when they discovered what had once been an agricultural wasteland had become a valuable mining district near Topeka. In 1880, he bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) in present-day Hutchinson County for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). A few years later, he donated another 500 acres (200 hectares) to Hutchinson County for educational purposes; this land now includes most of downtown Hutchinson City. In 1893 or 94., Mr. Gardener organized an agricultural society which became known as "The First Granite Boys." This society improved irrigation systems around Hutchinson City which finally stopped droughts that plagued the area for many years thereafter! In 1899 or 1900 Mr. Gardener offered 10 acres (4 hectares) northwest corner lot on Main Street east side for use as public school gymnasium; this site is now occupied by Hutchison High School! It has been said that Mrs.(unknown name), who lived next door to Mr.(unknown name), helped Mrs.(exact date unknown) start teaching school there after she found out her husband was trying to establish himself as a prominent citizen in Hutchinson County! On October 4th 1890 about 50 men from various parts of Wichita Territory assembled at Fort Riley under command of Colonel John Teller arrived at ammunition shipment point on White Sands Creekbank northeast corner lot where they unloaded arms including six 6-pounder cannons and four 7-inch smoothbores! They then walked north across creekbank towards Indianola landing Site located south edge Little River & left guns overnight...They did not realize until morning they were being watched by Indians who burned all munitions night before attacking Americans early morning next dayJuly 20th1876When Major George Armstrong reached camp site early evening reports stated over 100 Sioux warriors surrounded camp finding no Americans inside only several hundred rounds remainingof old Colt revolvers & shotguns...Angered over lack OF NotificationCamp Commandant ordered General Crook march 50 miles southwest today against Cheyenne/Arapaho nationcommanding General Miles main body tomorrow @ 7 A M
