In 1951, Gardner City was established adjacent to Gardner on the east side of the Arkansas River. The city developed around two shopping malls and a large hospital. His death helped start a national mourning for war dead which lasted until 1973 when President Richard Nixon declared "Custer Day" on November 19th instead because it coincided with Veterans' Day. In 1868 Lambert Latham platted what would become Gardner after driving out prospectors seeking gold along Silver Creek west of present day Wichita Falls, Texas who established nearby Fort Worth Landing on Black Mesa about 20 miles east of present day Wichita Falls. A post office called Dixon was opened at Granger on December 15th, 1869 under authority from Fort Worth Landing which had earlier been named New Mexico Land Grant #10A from USGS Surveyor John Lloyd Robinson Sr.. On July 4th 1870 Latham sold Dixon to Wm Hogg for $1 cash plus all future profits from grain sales from Granger to Dodge City & Topeka through March 31st each year thereafter also free from customs duties crossing into Mexican based San Juan Baja California territory thru this route only… This offered sweet trade terms because no one wanted to pay duty on goods shipped into Mexico then being taxed by their own government back home….. What followed was another boom period during which over $40 million dollars worth of property were purchased within just 10 years including much valuable real estate located near present day Hutchinson (now Topeka) including: Oakdale (now Best Western Eagle Forum Hotel), Villa Park (now Village Inn & Conference Center), Globe Hill (now GOJO’s Texas Court House Annex), Southgate (later known as Lone Star Shopping mall) and many more! Today’s downtown core includes several blocks long streets filled with businesses dating back over 100 years! Today's Gardner consists mostlyof single family homes built between World War II-era military housing developments erected adjacentto existing schools/universities such as Eastern Illinois University/Chicago IL and Wichita State University KS; both located within walking distance or less than 5 minutes away by car or bus stops currently active serves as retail districts serving professional/managerial employees commuting intoWichita Falls; Perot Avenue NE becomes North Main Street; Fillmore Drive SW turns into West Main Street SE before terminating at US Highways 36 & 56
