It is named after Judge John W. Gardner of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri who served from 1865 to 1869 and again from 1877 to 1889. Gardner is located at (36.814352, -99.664694). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 792 people residing in Gardner; 321 households were made up of individuals and 219 had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01

In 1907, Gardner became one of thirteen towns located along the Omaha-Kansas City railway line. Today, Gardner is a small community located about sixty miles west of Wichita on I-435 between Topeka and Mission Hills.
Gardner was founded in 1854 by John L. Gardner, a contractor and builder. The town was named for John Gardner, the founder of the Gardner Manufacturing Company. In 1872, the company moved to Topeka and became the Kansas City Arsenal Company. The company produced artillery munitions and other military supplies. The armory closed in 1912.
