On November 15, 1876, a group of renegades led by Bundick fought a pitched battle with U.S. Cavalry troopers at the edge of town. They landed on land that they had purchased east of Wichita Falls on the Missouri River. There were only few buildings standing within walking distance of where they now reside: the family's farmstead stood alone on one endof what is now Main Street;the next largest settlement was about three miles west on White Sands Road;and further north on Brushy Creek Road there were some stores and residences but no commercial center or schoolhouse complex existing at that time."
