Gardner, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,469 at the 2010 census. Gardner was founded in 1871 by Methodist missionaries as a mission station on the Santa Fe Railway. The town post office was established in 1872 and remained in operation until it closed in 1949. It reopened under the name of Gardner after local resident Orville G. Gardner donated $10,000 to help finance the new post office. The first settler to arrive in what is now Gardner was George Aiken who arrived on December 9th, 1870 from Illinois via Nebraska Territory. He named his land "Wichita" after Wichita Falls in Texas where he had been living before moving eastward across the Plains into what is now Johnson County. On February 17th, 1872 George Aiken married Fannie Caldwell and they started their own family with six children: Ada (baptized October 12th), John W., Charles M., Evalyn E., Wilbur D., and Orville G.. In 1875 two more settlers arrived; Alpheus Hodsdon and Jesse Snively both of whom were born near Wichita Falls Texas but brought their families here to live while they looked for a ranch or homestead site that would provide them with enough land to support them all. In 1880 there were only 350 residents of Hutchinson Township according to one source while 2,811 people lived withinJohnson County when it became organized as a county on November 16th 1860 by Territorial Governor James Kiefer Daniel Beebe It wasn't until 1886 when voters approved an increase in school funding which led to the construction of two schools within the present day boundaries of Gardner which opened for instruction on September 15th that any semblance of community development emerged within this rural area known then as "Hutchinson Township". This progress towards self-reliance however stopped whenarter line moved west from Topeka cutting off access to much needed farmland including much of what is now Gardner township including most of today's core population center with its original courthouse/town square located just east of Main Street between Second and Third Streets - an important cultural landmark still extant today! With few other options available for linking up with nearby towns such as Topeka or Shawnee City (now Independence) during these early years farming done largely along wagon trails supplemented by hunting and gathering proved sufficient sustenance for these pioneer farmers whose lifestyle barely resembled that enjoyed by their counterparts back home two generations earlier!
