In Gardner, Kansas, the first guns were made in 1867 by a man named George W. Gardner. The first handguns were made with iron sights and called "Gardner's Gun sights." By 1881, there was a gun range in Gardner and people started using pistols with adjustable rear sights. In 1907, an Act to arm the public was passed in Kansas and the first pistol laws were created. Gardner became one of the few cities in Kansas to have its own police department.

Gardner, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. Gardner was founded in 1871 by George H. Gardner and his wife Lillie. It is the county seat of Sedgwick County. The first store in Gardner opened on October 12, 1871. In 1927 the old post office building burned down and was replaced with a new one which still stands today. The first school in Gardner was built on Indian Hill Road in 1872 and served students from Sedgwick County until it closed in 1916. At that time all of Sedgwick County schools were consolidated into one school system. In 1926 the town also built its own water tower which still stands to this day. The city of Gardner has grown around the courthouse complex located on Main Street between Second and Third Streets since it was established as a city in 1984. There are now three hotels within walking distance of each other: Marriott's Inn on Fourth Street between First Avenue and Main Street, Best Western Plus Resort & Casino off I-435 east of interstate highway 35 (just north of downtown), and Holiday Inn Express off I-435 east of Interstate highway 35 (just south of downtown). A fourth hotel is planned for development just east of Meridian Boulevard across from KFC corporate headquarters
Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1855 by a group of pioneers led by John C. Gardner. The town was named for John C. Gardner, who had early encouraged settlement in that area. The townsite was located on the bank of the River Jo Daviess and became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In addition to its importance as a transportation hub, Gardner also served as a center for agricultural production and commerce. The community achieved significant growth during the late 19th century, with additions including a school, grocery store, post office and cotton gin. However, during World War II both Gardner and nearby Newton were attacked by Japanese forces and many homes were destroyed or burned. Since then the town has seen modest growth with limited infrastructure development.
