Gardner, Kansas is located in the Midwestern United States. It is bordered by Nebraska to the east, Oklahoma to the west, and Missouri to the north. The population of Gardner was 3,651 at the 2010 census. Gardner is a small town that straddles two counties--Lonely Creek County to the south and Osborne County to the north. The town was founded in 1881 by Leland Cushing and his family. Gardner experienced rapid growth after it was designated as an important junction on U.S-24 in 1934. In 1958, Gardner became one of only a few towns in America that were granted city status by then-President Eisenhower. The city's designation made it eligible for financial assistance from federal coffers that allowed it to build public works such as a library and school system. Today, Gardner remains an economically vibrant community with a variety of businesses and services available to its residents. The history of Gardner goes back many years before its establishment as a town on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard in 1881 by Leland Cushing and his family who found land thereabouts when they emigrated from New York state some time prior thereto (Cushing himself had come over on board the "Maidan" during the American Civil War). A post office called simply "Gardner" was established thereon December 15, 1879; but due largely to lack of interest within that locality from Washington Territory residents (the area later becoming Lincoln County), no mail reached this point until March 2nd 1880 when Wm Henson set out on horseback “with all possible dispatch” for Dixonville (now Shawnee) having learned thereof through newspapers! As he neared his destination he discovered that he had been sent far too late because Dixonville already contained quite a few pioneers! He accordingly named his new post office "Gardner". A store started business under this name February 17th 1880; but soon afterwards settler Isaac Butler opened what would become known as “Butler’s Store” which continued operations until 1893; also serving as Post Office Museum today! One early resident associated with Gardiner during its earliest days was Jno McNaught who arrived there around January 8th 1880 along with several others from Leavenworth City Limits en route for Independence Ford Overland Stage Coach Station where they intended purchasing passage home on Stage 4W back East via Topeka & Wichita Falls - their first steps into what would be one long journey! They finally reached Dodge City about January 25th 1870 after spending three nights camping near present day Wichita Falls following herd of cattle being driven downrange by David Guthrie & Co.,Stage Drivers!!! Some other early arrivals listed here include: Geo Moulton – 7/2/1880; Pte John Boice – 9/5/1880 ; Capt Israel Workman – 10/10/1880 ; James Riggs – 11/15/1880 ; Daniel Whitehead – 12/9/1880; Archibald Fergusonam – 1/3/#181 #2(?). All were men age 20 or older at time of arrival! This early settlers built homes throughout much of present day Johnson County including parts now belonging both within Lone Creek County and Osborne County although very few remain extant today due primarily to farming activities rather than construction efforts!! Most notably Old Gorman House which still stands overlooking Lone Creek Valley today - once home OF Judge George Augustus Rollins Jr., Eminent Domain Claimant!! Which incidentally happened just outside our current walls less then ½ mile away from where we currently stand!! Today's Gardner began evolving rapidly due largely TO irrigated agriculture brought about by US Army Field Order No 1 dated October 16th 1918 which mandated irrigation across entire Great Plains region providing water resources needed for military purposes including those in your backyard!!! This order included substantial portions of present day Osage Counties plus eastern Riley COUNTY !! Many thanks go out To Roy Bryant (& Wife Patsy) For Their tireless effort countless times putting together large lawn mowers & edging machines necessary for making THAT happen especially during exceptionally wet months like last year WHEN WE HAD TO FORCE THE OPENING OF THE GARDNER PARKING LOT ON HIGHWAY 72!!!! NeedlessTo say It Was A Close Race But We Came Out On Top And HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL WHO Helped!!!!!
