Gardner, Kansas is a small town located in the southeast corner of the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Anadarko metropolitan area and is included in the Wichita–Aldine, KS Combined Statistical Area. Gardner was first settled by pioneers in 1854 and became a town on July 1, 1907. The community was named for Ebenezer Gardner, an early settler who helped organize the Nebraska Territorial Legislature in 1855 and served as its first president. The town was also named for General James K. Polk, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war from 1892 to 1893 and then as governor of Nebraska from 1893 to 1897. Gardner has been home to many local businesses and institutions over its history including: Western Union Telegraph Company (founded 1865), Gardner County courthouse (1896), Gardner High School (1912), Yates Business College (1930), Armstrong American Legion Post #913 (founded 1935), First Baptist Church (founded 1902) and First United Methodist Church (founded 1909). The Hutchinson-based Mid-America Broadcasting Company produced live local news broadcasts from Gardner until it closed down in 2006; that station's former transmitter site still stands today across the street from First United Methodist Church--the only extant building left standing from one of Mid-America Broadcasting Company's original stations in Gardner! In recent years, Gardner has seen steady growth with new development coming online such as: PinnaclePointe apartments tower located off US 50 near Main Street; Wellmark Place apartment complex just south of US 50 on Wellmark Drive; Assemblage Place multifamily housing development adjacent to PinnaclePointe tower; Pioneer Park - a mixed use park containing dozens of soccer fields, basketball courts, picnic areas,and more - adjacent to Wellmark Place apartment complex . In addition to this new development there have been several renovations/additions made to existing homes including: an updated grocery store & restaurant called "Pioneer Village", newly renovated tennis courts & playgrounds at Pioneer Park - which includes a dugout specifically designed for softball games - ; updated fireplaces & bathrooms inside city limits' City Hall; redevelopment of Garrard Ford Square into an intimate urban farmer market hosted annually by Butler University student organization CropLifeKC during fall term each year since 2007; and finally renovation work being done on city hall which will include brand new sidewalks + ADA accessibility features among other improvements!
