It was originally located at 8th and Sherman Streets, but it moved to its current location on East Seventh Street in 1922. Gardner was a small, welcoming town in the early twentieth century. The town had been founded by James Gardner in 1871 as a stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1903, Gardner became the county seat of Atchison County and Gardner became known for its large cotton crops. The population of Gardner peaked at 1,500 in 1920, but declined to about 500 by 1940. However, because of technological advances and an increasing number of jobs in nearby Wichita, the population of Gardner grew again from 600 to 1,500 by 1980. The history of Gardner begins with its founders. James Gardner was born in 1821 in Vermont and came to Kansas Territory with his family in 1849. He settled near Topeka and began trading goods with Native American groups before he founded what would become known as Gardnersville. By 1861, Gardner had purchased over 350 acres (160 hectares) around what is now downtown Gardnersville and started growing cotton. From this location, he continued to produce crops until his death in 1865 at the age of 72 years old. His son John Fenton took over management of the business until it closed down during World War II due to wartime rationing. Today, you can still find evidence that James Gardner was once a busy man: There are several homes located close to downtown that were built during his time as well as several pieces of equipment from his day such as a corn elevator and cotton gin that remain today within city limits! Additionally, there is also a small park located just west of downtown which features remnants from when Gardnersville had a significant population! All these facts help make up oneof America's earliest towns – Gardnersville first bloomed thanks to James Gardner’s hard work!
Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1881 by James Gardner and wife Martha. The early pioneers of the area were farmers who had to find new ways to support their families. Eventually, Gardner became a cattleman and investments led him to develop a sawmill and other businesses. In 1916, he donated land to the local school district which has since been named Gardner-Meadows School District.
