Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1881 by George Gardner. Gardner is a city in the Wichita County, Kansas, United States and is the seat of Wichita County government. The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. George Gardner started out as a farmer in what is now Gardner. He moved to Wichita in 1881 and opened a general store called the Western Store on Third Street. In 1886 he married Laura Burt and their first child was born that year. They also started a blacksmith shop on Main Street which continued until 1903 when they bought an additional plot of land to build their home on. Their house still stands today and it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. In 1907 George Gardner conceived another idea for his town: A farmers market! He erected two poles across Second Street (now Murray Drive) and held market days every Monday from 1907 to 1912. The Market Days were so successful that Gardner decided to keep them every week instead of having one week off each month like he had before! He also put up a white tent over his store during those years to show off his newmarket concept to potential investors who would come by for business purposes only! The Gartners' dream of having their own grocery store came true in 1914 when they bought the old First National Bank building at Fourth and Washburn Streets from its previous owner, John Sperry Jr.. Mrs. Gartner served as cashier for many years before retiring in 1984 after more than fifty years with NOSHIBA Corporation as its official accountant/bookkeeper-cum-manager responsible for all financial activities within NOSHIBA Corporation's various divisions including banking, insurance, real estate development/acquisition/maintaining properties etc.–a position she held concurrently with her husband until his death in 1992). From then until her retirement Mrs. Gartner ran her own small grocery store under the family name 'Gardner Bros.' till finally sold it to compete directly wit Henni's Grocery Co., Inc., currently operates as an independently owned supermarket chain throughout North America under that same name though technically it traces its roots back even further back whence actually it goes back much earlier still - long before there actually ever was any Bennett family groceries operating anywhere near Wichita –dating back way back even prior to incorporation of this particular town into what would become known as Wichita Falls circa 1865 when three brothers named Isaac & Abram Bennett established themselves hereabouts along with some early pioneers who had settled hereabouts early enoughactually establishing mills & other businesses thereof which grew rapidly leading eventuallyto incorporation into present day Butler County aforesaid nicknamed 'Wichita Falls'
