One group of these early pioneers, led by John A. Gardener, started out from central Kansas Territory on April 20, 1867 to settle what would become known as Gardner Township (now part of Hutchinson). John A.'s parents had come overland from Pennsylvania some time earlier and settled near present day Topeka on January 17th of that year according to one account... They named their newly acquired land "Gardner" after their son's older brother Jonathan whom they had met while traveling westward through Nebraska during a family visit there some time previous... Mollie also came overland from Pennsylvania and landed at Fort Douglas on July 5thanto join her husband shortly thereafter... Both women mustered into Company K under Captains James Hutton and David Stevenson as part of American forces occupying Mexico during the Mexican-American War... In addition to agriculture this initial early settler activity included butchering gamebirds for meat and feathers until late summer whenModean rifle powder became available; trapping hogs; gathering corn; building stockade fences aroundLogansville homestead beginnings where cattle were later penned up following Indian Wars situation still extant into late 1800s nearby present day Wichita Hills
