The first gun-cleaning machine was built by Hiram Sibley in 1875 at his shop on Main Street near present day US Highway 624 east of downtown Gardner. It consisted of a large wheel which turned an outside brush into a fine dust that could be swept away Mirrors or other equipment used for storage or display; this machine also removed fingerprints from pistols gripes etc.). At one point in its history (c1885), the Brush Wagon Machine Company operated out of the old post office building located on Main Street between 3rd St NE & Independence Ave NE). It employed ten men at $3 per week each including overtime pay! The company produced brushes made from horsehair, straw, cotton twine & other materials which were then dipped in lead styptic acid before being used to clean firearms (the use of lead styptic acid is still considered safe today).
