The gun chokes were developed by Major General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War to prevent cavalry horses from drawing rein and triggering a battle-related panic. Gardner's rifle range was also one of the first in America to offer concealed carry permits.
Gardner, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. Gardner is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. It lies within Blue Grass County and is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first people to live in Gardner were Native American hunters and gatherers who hunted game along the riverbanks. In 1855, John Hays moved from Topeka to start a cattle ranch in what is now Gardner. The town was founded by James A. Gardner in 1881 as a result of his purchase of land east of Wichita from Elijah Peebles. In 1906, Gardner became one of two townships within Blue Grass County when it was created from parts of Fayette and Leavenworth counties. At that time, it had a population of just over 100 residents and served as an enclave for farmers living near Wichita's steel mills and oil fields. Since its inception, Gardner has been home to several businesses including Jamba Juice (now known as Chobani) and Gouda cheese fame David Lipsky Sr., who co-founded Pizza Hut with his brother Dan Lipsky in 1976. The local paper mill closed down in 1984 but reopened as an agricultural museum in 2001 after going out Of Business Recovery Act bankruptcy. Today, both businesses are owned by Zeneca Corporation which also operates nearby Eastman Kodak factory having closure aftermaths throughout late 1990s/2000s due to digital photography revolutionization which impacted movie industry - this led to employment loss among local workforce during early 21st century locally while Zeneca enjoyed profits year-on-year due to global recession). In 1855, Gardner was founded by John S. Gardner and James W. Hibbard as the first city in Kansas. The city served as a transportation hub for settlers moving westward during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1870, Gardner became the capital of Kansas.
