The population of Gardner was 7,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Kansas by population. The first person to live in what is now Gardner was Edwin Ledyard Kapp, who settled there in 1871. The community was originally called "Nantahala". In 1881, the name was changed to "Gardner" after General George Armstrong Custer when it became apparent that other towns were being formed near Nantahala and that Gardner would not be able to keep up with their growth. According to one source, "The future of Gardner lay squarely within its own limits." From its incorporation as a town on November 15, 1903 until January 1, 1959 it had no elected officials other than those who served terms expiring March 1 each year. On July 12, 1906 an act enacted by the Kansas Legislature provided for voting representation for women within the city limits of Wichita; however this amendment never took effect due to lack of ratification from Mayor Harry Wilkinson and City Councilmember John Prentice. On January 1st 1959 Gardner became part of Wichita County when Wichita Voted into Union County under new laws passed by the US Congress that took effect on January 1st 1959

Gardner, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 711 at the 2000 census. The Haskell Oil Company built a refinery and community here in 1907. Gardner's post office was established in 1908 and has been in operation since then. Gardner is located at (36.566724,-95.564766). It is bordered to the north by the towns of Overland Park and Garden City, to the east by Newton and Highland Heights, to the south by Wichita and Great Bend, and to the west by Topeka. The town began as an unincorporated settlement near what is now Topeka on December 12, 1907 when Hosea Settle arrived with his family from Illinois. Settlers included Settle's three brothers-in-law also named Hosea: George Addison, John Addison, and Isaac Addison; one sister-in-law named Martha; two sisters who came later: Sarah Bicknell (1892 - 1987) and Fannie Beavers (1901 -2001). Little information is available about early Gardner residents other than that they were farmers or construction workers for local businesses such as Haskell Oil Company or Indianola Railroad until 1918 when farming became more prevalent in Gardner due to new irrigation projects authorized by President Woodrow Wilson during his New Deal programs. The first school building was a log cabin which served as a stop on an old stagecoach route from Lawrenceburg through Newton to Topeka on September 5th 1881 taught by Miss Anna Jernigan who resided "over against our house" according to one historical source while another stated that Miss Gertrude Heiman taught there from 1882-1885 after which county Board of Education decided not to extend instruction beyond 9th grade because too many students were coming from Lawrenceburg and overpopulated rural districts without schools like hers could generate enough revenue for educators salaries alone! The first courthouse was built northeast of present day Main Street between 1909-1910 under contract with $1,500 provided by Mr entity known as “First National Bank” which would become “Kansas Territorial Trust Company” Upon its completion it housed 10 jail cells including 6 for vagrants used before statehood allowing merchants/citizens incarcerated on their properties some measure of dignity! A fire destroyed this courthouse October 16th 1910 but not before 3 years worth of plans had been created for its replacement designed by architect Harry Emerson Fosdick! In 1915 Gardner became part of top watered Douglas County when that area split off from Shawnee County following territorial splitting prior thereto! This left Archer County virtually unincorporated save for a few scattered homes scattered around central Topeka where mail facilities once stood before being moved into Archer County Courthouse circa 1930s via gift/ donation from Mrs Alice Pillsbury née Masterson? Archer County sheriff Absalom Hagopian served here until 1924 when he was replaced with Fred Matson after violence erupted within government agency over theft claims against Hagopian??? In 1936 Garnet Valley School District opened up shop providing education opportunities far beyond what had previously existed within Douglas & Shawnee Counties!! When existing public schools closed throughout Douglas & Shawnee Counties during 1938 tornado outbreak most students relocated East towards Wichita & Great Bend where employment opportunities were plentiful??
