Gardner is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and about northeast of Topeka. The first settler in Gardner was Isaac Benton in 1855. It was named after General John Gardner who fought in the Mexican-American War. The Bentons were replaced by the Phelps family in 1860. In 1871, Michael Phelps donated land to make up for a gift he had made to his father two years earlier when they were both farmers in Holcombe County, Massachusetts. The community began as a station on the Santa Fe Railway and became an incorporated town on July 14, 1919. Gardner has been ranked as one of "America's safest communities" by Forbes Magazine and also has been awarded two national awards from largest professional organization for safety excellence - Incredi-Shields Award (2007) and American Firefighters Association Hall of Fame (2011). In May 2006, Gardner became one of only 20 towns across America to be inscribed into the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and history associated with that era. On October 3rd, 2016 it was announced that Gardner would become home to an IMAX theatre which will open in late 2017

Gardner, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas that was founded in 1867. Gardner is located on the eastern edge of the Great Plains about 115 miles (185 km) north of Wichita and about 105 miles (175 km) south-southwest of Topeka. The name Gardner comes from Robert E. Gardner, who donated land for the town site and helped to finance its construction. The first settlers in what is now Gardner were farmers who arrived in 1867 from Rome, New York. They built their homes on cleared land grant from the United States government which they owned and cultivated until 1880 when they sold their holdings to local citizens. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Gardner experienced population growth due to an influx of miners who came to strike silver bars at nearby Big Spring Hill near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas during that decade’s boom period in American mining industry. In 1907, Barton Grosvenor Hot Springs was established within walking distance of Gardner by wealthy businessman Barton Grosvenor Waitley as a thermal spa with mineralogical baths and health resort for his wife’s family and friends; it remains one of Kiowa County’s most popular tourist destinations today. In 1924, Kansan coal mine owner James Fenton leased land east of downtown Gardnersville for a new coalfield; this area became known as Fentontown after him because many people worked there during its early years surplus to production at local mines not far away). The following year, he merged his company with several others forming International Copper Mines—the world’s largest copper producer at that time—becoming one of America’s leading companies with interests throughout North America including mining operations in both Canada and Mexico where he mined lead goldsilver nuggets on large tracts near Durango Lake just outside Mexico City while also owning interests significant enough to require operation outposts within those countries including Fort Huachuca (now Tucson), Chihuahua City (now Ciudad Juárez), Monterrey (now Mexico City), Coahuila de Zaragoza (now Zal Tunnel National Park). Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1854 by George Gardner and his wife Polly. The town was named after Gardner's father, who had homesteaded there in 1839. The area now comprising Gardner had been surveyed in 1836 by the territorial government as part of the Wichita Purchase. The first post office was established at Gardner on October 15, 1846. In 1861, Gardner became a market town when the Missouri Pacific Railroad arrived through Wichita Territory. In 1865, the Territorial Legislature passed an act providing for a school district within the territory; that same year, the first school building was built at Gardner. The population of Gardner grew rapidly during this time; by 1870 it had reached 1,500 people. The early years of the 20th century were difficult for Gardner; its economy suffered from competition from nearby cities and towns. However, due to efforts by local officials and citizens, including William Tilton (1860-1929), Gardner regained some stability during this period. In 1924, another community development act created what is now known as North Hutchinson Township; this helped spur growth in north-central Wichita Territory during this period. In 1934, Kansas enacted legislation creating Wichita County; within Wichita County were two rural districts: North Hutchinson Township and South Hutchinson Township. These districts were combined into one civil township in 1956 under similar legislation which also added Garden City and other municipalities to Wichita County limits while still remaining outside of city boundaries
