Gardner, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Gardner is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The area that would become Gardner was first settled by Europeans in 1855. The first post office in Gardner was founded in 1856. By 1860, Gardner had a population of about 125 people and a store. In 1861, John Dillard built what is now what is known as Dillard's Store on Main Street in Gardner. The railroad arrived in 1865 and quickly generated growth throughout Johnson County. By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Gardner and surrounding areas. A sawmill and gristmill were built around this time along the riverbanks near present day Barton Elementary School and High School respectively. In 1876, Gilbert Hoyle donated land to build an Academy for Young Ladies which became known as Girard College (later renamed Prairie View A&M University). Gardner experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century with numerous businesses opening up including several hotels/motels along Main Street as well as several churches and schools (including Girard College) being constructed or enlarged throughout the decade-long boom period that followed World War I (1914-1918). One such development was The Cotton Mill which opened its doors on Main Street in 1918 providing employment for approximately 150 people at its peak while also contributing to increased tourism within town limits enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike during this time frame In 1925 when then- Mayor Don Fenton announced plans to establish a high school within town limits he knew that there would be strong opposition from those who felt that their children should instead continue attending local academies/schools established within town limits only . However after much negotiation Fairmont High School became operational less than two years later following groundbreaking ceremonies held on February 17th 1927 just south of present day Barton Elementary School . This institution would prove to be one of Town's most successful ever endeavors with students graduating from it into various careers including many who went on to lead distinguished lives outside of their hometown including current Mayor Don Fenton himself
