Gardner, Kansas was born on July 6th, 1871 to parents Abraham and Sarah Gardner. The town of Gardner was founded in 1855 by the Gartners after they purchased 1,000 acres of land in what is now Douglas County. The town quickly grew and soon became a center for agriculture. In 1907, the town renamed itself after General George Custer and granted him a monument in the grounds of the Gardner-Custer Museum. In 1927, General George S. Patton visited Gardner and stopped at the museum to receive an honorary degree from its president, Rear Admiral James Fenton. The museum also sponsors several exhibitions each year including "The American West: A Cultural History" which opens to the public on October 9th. In recent years, Gardner has regained some of its former glory as a center for education and culture. The community has produced many famous people such as author Ken Follett and actor/director Clint Eastwood.
Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1868 by a group of farmers who wanted to create a new community on the edge of the Indian Territory. The name Gardner came from General George Armstrong Custer's battlefield victory over the Sioux in 1876. The town was founded on 120 acres of land donated by John Hodge and his wife, Nancy. It grew quickly, and soon had a post office, school, brewery, and three churches. The town lost its importance after it was moved to Topeka in 1907. However, it has been preserved as a small community with its own history museum and tourism industry.
