In 1951, Gardner became home to what is now known as Topeka State University after it moved from Haskell University westward from its original site near Larned Creek Road (now US 71) into what is now downtown Maxwell Fields Drive. In 1965 Topeka State University moved again when Wichita State University relocated from Wichita to eastside Wichita following their merger with Midwestern Illinois Universities Association (MUIA). Today's campus covers much of downtown Maxwell Fields Drive including areas once occupied byKansas Agricultural College (KAC), Hutchinson Technical Institute (HITI),Topeka State Normal School (TSN), and Wichita Business College (WBC). Despite being located outside Topeka proper (), KSU has maintained close ties with its sister institution throughout their history (). In 1854, three men - Abraham Lincoln (of Illinois), Gideon Welles (of Kentucky) and Joel Barlow (of Vermont) - decided to move westward into what is now Kansas Territory2. They were motivated by their desire to find new land where they could make money mining resources such as coal or oil3. Unfortunately for these entrepreneurs, conflict soon arose between them and Native Americans over land rights4. As tensions mounted, some of the early pioneers turned back from their journey upstream7 while others continued onwards8. Ultimately only about 25% of those who started out reached Wichita9; most came downriver5 instead9 because they lacked transportation or other means of reaching their prospective destination1020-22including almost all of those who settled in present-day Gardner81112-14excepting one man1415 whose family moved there after he lost his fortune operating a small ranch1617-19outside Wichita2021-23despite warnings from local officials24 that such activity would lead to increased violence2526and consequences2728such as confiscation of property2930and expulsion from Indian Territory3031 although some members managed eventually to return3334).
