The community was founded in 1881 by Daniel Gardner and his wife Sarah Stephens. They named it after their brother-in-law George Gardner, who had moved to Kansas from Illinois. The first store in Gardner was built on the east side of town. A post office was established there in 1882 and stayed open until 1907. In 1902, a school district was organized and Gardner became one of its townships. Gardner has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and their language remains spoken today by some 30 people native to the area including 10 children of current residents living in Gardner as well as 5 grandchildren of original settlers. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Gardner came from Topeka, Kansas around 1859 with James Fenton looking for land to farm following his purchase of 6 acres (2 ha) near present day Wichita Falls, Texas from John Salter for $600 USD A church service held on July 15th 1870 at what is now the village square spot marked where James Fenton's wagon hit a rock which caused him great injury during his attempted crossing into Indian Territory that year will forever remain an episode in local history as "The Day That Never Was." The town became a federal corporation in 1907 and has since been served by the United States Postal Service. The first post office in Gardner was established on October 10, 1907. The current post office building was built in 1951 and is located at 5th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. In 1917, the United States Congress passed an act providing for the organization of a municipal government for the town of Gardner. This act created a city government which functioned until 1934 when it was abolished by legislation due to its own lack of funding. Gardner has had many different industries over its history including lumbering, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and retail trade; however, its most recent focus has been service-industry growth with contributions from restaurants and businesses that provide social services such as daycare and libraries to local communities.
