Garden City, Kansas is a town in Roosevelt County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Garden City was founded in 1881 as a small village on the edge of present-day Garden City. It grew up around the Haskell school and post office, which were both located near the center of town. In 1925, Garden City incorporated as a city. The growth of Garden City has been due to its location within easy commuting distance of Wichita and Topeka and its access to education and industry. The original settlers in what is now Garden City were farmers who came from Pennsylvania in 1853. They started out farming corn and beans on their homesteads but soon realized that they needed more land for agriculture because there was not enough water for crops alone. So they sold their farms and moved to Hutchinson County where they got grants from the US Government to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of land north of Hutchinson Creek. This area would later become Garden City when it became part of Roosevelt County. The first settler in what is now Garden City was John Purdy who arrived on July 6, 1881, with his family from Indiana. He had married Sarah Allbright and together they set about building a log cabin near where the current post office is located today. John Purdy died five months after settlement occurred so his wife decided to name her new settlement "GardenCity" after her husband's hometown of Indianapolis (now Fort Wayne). In 1925, when Garden city incorporation took place, it consisted only of a few homes scattered around downtown along Main Street which ran east-west through the heart of town. Today downtown has grown into one large area with over 100 buildings including several hotels/motels; two banks; three churches; four health clinics; two grocery stores; three restaurants; two law offices; one hospital; one garage; one park - all within walking distance! Downtown also contains several historically significant buildings such as Hennepin county courthouse (built 1905), First National Bank Building (1925), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1886), Presbyterian Church (1885), Hotel Wichita (1925) and many more!
