Garden City, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 7,423 at the 2010 census. Garden City is located in the Wichita metropolitan area. It lies within Kaufman County, Kansas. The first permanent settler in Garden City was John Atkins who arrived in 1854 and named it after his home city of London, England. Atkinsson and his family were the first white residents to live in Garden City when it was platted as a town on November 16, 1855 by A.F. Ladd and Wm Cranch under the name of "Garden City." Ladd had emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland in 1845 and had founded an agricultural settlement east of Topeka called Sheppard's Landing on the Arkansas River near present-day Wichita Falls before coming to Kansas Territory in 1861. He named his new community Garden City after himself and gave it its initial platting: ". . . for President James Ketchum that during his incumbency from January 2d to May 14th he exhibiting great personal bravery & good sense exhibited at various places viz., at Lawrenceburgh about three miles west of this place; also at Council Grove on the Little Arkansas River one hundred yards south of this place; near Topeka where Major General Hennepin fought with General Scott against Gen’l Doniphan;" A post office was established at Garden City on December 4, 1865, by order of Territorial Governor Charles Curtis and served until May 1, 1870; then it was moved to Hutchinson. The original adobe building now known as Prairie View A&M University's Administration Building stood on what is now Main Street between First Avenue South and Seventh Street North when it opened its doors in September 1870 (see photo). In 1881–82 Union Pacific Railroad built a line north from Manhattan through Wichita to Nacogdoches IL carrying settlers looking for land grants along the way but no villages were actually established until after World War II when farmers started raising cotton thereabouts because none of their local landowners would allow cotton planting outside their plantations Gulf Cartage crops like sorghum or millet
The Garden City area was first settled by the Kansas Indians in the 1840s. The first white settlers arrived in 1854 and named the area Garden City after their home town of Garden City, England. The first store opened in 1861 and the population reached a peak of 100 people in 1865. However, during the American Civil War, many residents relocated to other parts of Kansas because of a shortage of food. In 1880, the city limits were expanded to encompass present-day Wichita. The population continued to grow until 1907 when it peaked at 375 people. After that point, growth stopped and the city has remained relatively stationary since then.
