Garden City, Kansas experienced a gun massacre on October 14th, 1897. A group of six men and one woman opened fire on a crowd of fifteen people at the Garden City Opera House. Five of the victims were killed outright and two were critically injured. The gunman, who has yet to be identified, was apprehended moments later and is currently serving life in prison without parole.
Garden City, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. Garden City is located in Barnes County. Garden City originally consisted of only two blocks, both of which are now part of the city limits. The first settlement in Garden City was built on land that was donated by James Aitken and his wife Margaret in 1859. The first courthouse in Garden City was built in 1881 and it served as the seat for Barnes County until 1907 when it moved to Topeka. The growth of Garden City began with the construction of the Wichita Railway Line in 1904 which connected Wichita with Phoenixville and other nearby towns. This line helped to promote agriculture and industry within the community and helped to stimulate economic development within Garden City. In 1927, an addition to the city Limits were constructed giving gardeners more access to land outside of downtown. This addition increased the number of residents living within city limits from 8 to 12%. During World War II, many people worked for Boeing Aircraft Corporation located north of Topeka along what is now Elm Street between Harrison Boulevard and I-635 (now S 42nd Street). Many people who lived near this area during World War II served in various roles at Boeing including workers on assembly lines, researchers, engineers, managers and others responsible for making airplane parts going into production around Wichita Falls Airport (later KFLL) across town (the original site). According to newspaper articles from that time period, many local families went into business themselves such as Mrs.(name unknown) who operated a lemonade stand on Harrison Boulevard which generated quite a bit revenue for her during war times; Mr.(name unknown) ran a grocery store adjacent to home; Mrs.(teacher) ran a daycare center; three children (aged 7-11 years old) managed their parents' businesses; several women worked long hours cleaning aircraft factories before returning home for dinner each night; four men worked nights at Boeing yards making parts for airplanes being assembled elsewhere FollowingWorldWarII there were modest efforts made by residents/businesses/government officials(such as Mayor John Jonson),and some redevelopment took place which included new housing developments such as Hawk's Landing east of downtown followed by Stilwell Court westward beginning in the late 1960s or early 1970s., subsequent rezoning has resulted primarily in piecemeal development with no overall plan or strategy established aside from individual developers interests rather than comprehensive planning or consensus among elected officials goals etc.. although recent redevelopment efforts have had some impact including renovation/replacement/upgrade projects at former industrial sites adjacent to urban cores like Topeka’s southwest side centered around Elmview Park & Shaver Park neighborhoods resulting in revived interest & investment among local leaders etc.; nonetheless much remains unaddressed about ongoing challenges faced by citizens (& government officials), particularly transportation needs especially since most areas remain susceptible to flooding due largely to heavy rains events & high winds patterns often causing extensive property damage eg: 3 homes destroyed during severe storm surge last year following tornado outbreak; infrastructure deterioration leading intermittently significant outages throughout central Topeka viz: water main break near Shawcross Road & Main Street 2 blocks southwest Of CBD; widely reported nuisance value assessed against 5 properties impacted assessment values range from $14K-$34K based on resident assessments alone
