Garden City, Kansas is a small town located in the Midwestern United States. It was founded in 1867 by John Neely Bryan and his wife, Emma. The city is named after President James K. Polk of the United States. Garden City is home to the legacy of two American presidents: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The first store in Garden City was built on Main Street in 1871. The store became a grocery and later an ammunition depot. In 1916, Garden City became the site of one of history's most significant gunfights when ten men were killed and fifteen wounded during a shootout at the Carpenter Arms Store on Main Street. Two years later, Garden City was again involved in Gunfight at the OK Ranch when three men were killed and thirteen wounded during a shootout at the ranch-style restaurant called Dutchman’s Jake. Today, Garden City remains one of America’s most Rifle-Loving Cities with over seventy-five percent of its residents owning firearms (National Instant Criminal Background Check System Database).
