Lead was also used in artillery pieces during the Civil War because it was strong enough to hold its own against other projectiles. In 1881, a company named L&H Manufacturing Company started makinggun barrels out of brass. This company became one of the leading manufacturers of firearms in America. The Brass Gun Barrel Corporation was founded by two brothers named John and Harry Lummis in 1907. These companies produced ammunition, firearms and other products until they merged into Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1980. Garden City's first shotgun barrel was made by George Wacoal & Sons on October 21st, 1886. This particular shotgun barrel had a length of forty-eight inches (100 cm). It was designed as a rifle barrel for use with shotguns such as the Winchester model 1887 pump action shotgun. At that time, garden city wasn't known for its gun manufacturing capabilities so this Barrel likely originated from another location

Garden City is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 3,083 at the 2010 census. Garden City is located in southern Pratt County on the east side of the Arkansas River. The area that would become Garden City was first settled by Europeans in 1854 as part of what is now Wichita County. In 1860, settlers from England named Parktown after their home town near London. By 1870, Garden City had grown to about 100 people and was known as a center for trade with surrounding counties. At that time, it was also an agricultural center with several thousand acres (approximately) of land irrigated through canals. In 1907, Kansas legislature passed a bill creating Garden City as an incorporated city with its own government and laws. The city's name derived from two nearby towns: "Garden" meaning "a place where flowers grow" and "City" meaning "city proper". The city's first mayor was William Darlow who served from 1907 to 1912; he was followed by Hamer Crouch until 1931 when Harry Ladd became Mayor. In 1933, Ladd donated land to the city for a new library which opened in 1935. From 1938 until 1960, Mayor James Jarrell served as acting mayor when Governor John Wirth occupied the state Capitol during sessions in Topeka because of health concerns related to tuberculosis (TB). On November 5th, 1960 Governor John Wirth resigned effective midnight due to ill health and James Jarrell became Acting Mayor until December 15th when he took over again from Robert Henneman whenGovernor George Wallace vacated his office because he had been elected Vice President of the United States less than two weeks earlier on November 3rd! During World War II Garden City played host to bothoirst Air Force Base which operated out of Wright-Patterson Airfield adjacent to downtown for parked planes and personnel; RAF Bentley Priory airfield located north-west of town across Elmira Reno Road used primarily for Spitfires; local farmers produced maize crops for feeder planes used by Eighth Air Force stationed at Grand Island; Army tanks were parked along Elmira Reno Road overnight before being moved back into storage and then Deployed against Japanese positions during Operation Confrontation on Iwo Jima

Wichita annexed Garden City on May 6, 1923. In 1930 the state of Kansas annexed Garden City and the name was changed to Hutchinson. The population had reached 100,000 by 1940 but declined to 90,000 by 1951 due to suburbanization and other factors. Hutchinson reverted back to its original name of Garden City on January 1, 1960. The current mayor is Susan Wojacki and the city has a population of over 120,000 people as of 2019
