Garden City, Kansas was founded in 1871 as a small town located on the banks of the Missouri River. The community became an important agricultural center during the early years of Kansas Territory and quickly became known for its firearms industry. In 1933, Garden City adopted its current name – Wichita – after Wichita Falls, Texas – then the state capital of Texas – when Wichita County was created from parts of Topeka County.[1] In 1934–35, Wichita hosted both an internationalarms fair called “World's Fair” at Municipal Auditorium and also celebrated National Rifle Association (NRA) birthday with military parades along Main Street.[2][3] After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2 1945,[4] Wichita experienced rapid economic growth that paralleled nationwide changes during that period.[5][6] During this time period many high-profile businessmen relocated to Wichita from nearby Topeka,[7] leading to what has been described as one of America's "golden age"of business development[8][9][10]. Garden City, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Garden City was founded in 1879 as a result of the sale of land to make way for a new railroad station. The original town site was about six miles west of today's city limits and included parts of present-day Johnson and Morton counties. The first settlers in Garden City were farmers who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1879. By 1880, several buildings had been erected and business operations began. In 1881, an act designated Garden City as the new seat of Johnson County when it was created from parts of Morton and Johnson counties. A post office was established at Garden City on July 10, 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 15, 1925. During the 1920s and 1930s there were significant growth efforts within Garden City by developers who desired to bring additional jobs to the community while others sought to maintain or improve existing infrastructure such as streets and schools. Today's downtown area is home to many businesses including two banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company and JPMorgan Chase Bank), four shoe stores (Sperry Shoes Inc., Looney Tunes Shoes Inc., Dillard's Department Stores Inc., Macy's) as well as three restaurants (Noodle House Chinese Restaurant, Jimmy John's Pizza Place & Suburban Barbecue).
