The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a city in 1907. In 1925, Garden City annexed portions of Hutchinson County to form its own municipality. A number of high-rise buildings have been erected around downtown since 2007 in anticipation of continued growth; this has led to concerns about air quality within the city limits.
