However during the 1960s through 1980s growth rates surged as new multi-national corporations began to plant their headquarters in Garden City along with massive construction projects such as the Reid Park Bridge which linked downtown to satellite towns around the periphery of the city limits. In recent years however there has been modest growth due to competition from Wichita’s own suburban development on adjacent rural land parcel

In 1916, Garden City became home to America's first air show when it hosted the International Air Races from March 9-11 at Midland Airport across from downtown Wichita. In 1948, Wichita annexed Garden City and most of adjacent rural Shawnee County into its limits while maintaining its own government structure; however, garden city retained some independent functions such as fire protection and zoning until 1959 when these responsibilities were transferred to Wichita Township along with other township functions such as public works and libraries
