The city was founded in 1872 by George Wickersham as Wickershamsville, although that name never caught on with residents because it felt too General Mills-y. It held its first election as a city on November 3, 1907[1] and ratified its charter on December 5, 1909. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people. By 1920,[2] the population had grown to 653 people[3], making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Kansas during that time period – even outpacing Topeka which only experienced growth rates between 1900 and 1920 of around 10%. During World War II, Emporia housed up to 2 million servicemen who filled various military installations within its boundaries – both inside and outside the city limits itself! In fact, so many servicemen were stationed here during World War II that when KANSAS CITY UNIVERSITY opened up adjacent to downtown Emporia in 1942 (!), there simply wasn’t enough space for everyone! After WWII ended, the city grew rapidly once again due to heavy immigration from Mexico along with other northern states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin which all lost much jobs during the war years thanks to government austerity measuresimposed by President Franklin D Roosevelt following his New Deal policies (among others). This migration led to increased demand for housing and businesses began sprouting up like weeds throughout downtown Emporia – right next door to where General Mills was building their new headquarters!!! And this development continued until well into the present day; not content with stagnating or shrinking job opportunities back home anymore!,…) emigrants started streaming into this burgeoning metropolis seeking fortunes beyond their means just like their predecessors had done centuries earlier! Today’s citizens are still devotedly supportive of one another despite some significant challenges faced by our community over recent years including budget deficits (#1 ranking among US cities for most affordable housing per capita!), plummeting tax base (+10% since 2000!), annexation/divisional conflict within neighboring towns (& more recently involving massive flooding along I-435 late last year!), & increasing crime rates…..all while clinging stubbornly onto what little hope remains amidst annual turnover rate above 50%!!! Despite these challenges & much more….the citizens continue coming out to vote (in local elections) every two years or so……ensuring that they have something voice & control over THEIR community…something we take seriously here at KCMO!!!!!!!!!

In 1907, the city annexed the Village of Watertown, which had been located within Emporia since 1881. commercial development in Emporia accelerated during World War II, as the city became a major military base for the United States Defense Department. However, during the postwar period economic decline forced many businesses to close or relocate within Emporia. In 2000, local officials announced plans to redevelop downtown into a mixed-use area with retail and office space. The redevelopment project was completed in 2006 and has resulted in increased traffic and financial problems for the city.

Emporia, Kansas was founded in 1867 by James H. Emporia and his family. The city's first post office was established in 1868. The town began to grow rapidly during the 1870s, thanks to its location on the fringes of a new railroad system and the growth of agriculture. In 1892, the town had a population of just over 2,000 people; within 10 years it had grown to over 5,000 residents. In 1902, Emporia became an incorporated town; and in 1907 it joined the United States as a state capital. The city continued to grow until 1925 when it merged with nearby Wichita to form Wichita-Emporia combined statistical area. As of 2016, Emporia has a population of nearly 24,000 people living in nearly 900 buildings downtown and along various blocks throughout its vicinity.
