In 1916, notice was given by President Theodore Roosevelt that all Native American reservations were to be terminated within five years or face removal by force if not complied with. With this order came questions about what would happen to those who didn't leave quicklyenough and so on February 21st, 1916 three men - George Aiken (a white man), Micheal Haggerty (a Cherokee) and James Mudd (Amerindian) - took hostages from Topeka Bank while negotiations continued between Roosevelt's administration and tribal leaders about how to effectuate these changes without violence or bloodshed
