By 1870, Emporia had grown significantly and had additions including an Overland Mail station on Main Street and two churches- First Methodist Episcopal (FME) Church built in 1872 and Second Presbyterian Church built in 1875- both of which remain standing today. In 1880, when Kansas became a state, Emporia became one of its earliest cities with over 10,000 residents! rapidly growing into an important industrial center during the late 19th century thanks to successful initiatives such as lay offs program following World War I which created jobs for local women; prohibition; growth associated with oil production during World War II.; establishment of Wichita State University (now Wichita Community College);and new housing developments like Kelly Park (later renamed Rexall Place). During most of the 20th centuryEmporia experienced significant economic prosperity due to heavy industry including Chrysler Corporation plants located at Rexall Place from 1925 until their closure in 1970; Arco Chemical Company; Mead Johnson Company; Western Electric Company; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company until their sale to Bridgestone tires in 2006; Kress Paper Products before its sale along with all other paper products operations to United Parcel Service Incorporated (UPS) late last year resulting in about 300 layoffs across all businesses combined! However recent years have seen some setbacks such as several bankruptcies among major companies acquired by UPS since then while unemployment rates continue high amid tight job market conditions overall statewide..
