Emporia, Kansas (population: 20,000) is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. It was founded in 1881 by George W. Emporia as the capital of Shawnee County. The citys current boundaries were created in 1907 when Lawrence,Kansas was organized into districts. In 1965, Emporia became an independent municipality and has since been governed by a mayor and a City Council. The population of Emporia increased from 5,000 in 1990 to 20,000 in 2010, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Kansas. The history of Emporia can be traced back to 1881 when George W. Emporia founded the city on land that he had purchased from the Shawnees Native Americans for $1 per acre ($10 million today). At first all local residents lived within their own neighborhoods but soon enough they began to need businesses and housing so they opened up space outside their homes to become what we now know as downtown Emporia. Downtown Emporia quickly became known as the cultural and business center of Shawnee County due to its many theaters, bookstores, banks and other businesses which allowed for much growth during its early years. Today Downtown is still home to many businesses including several restaurants which have helped keep Downtown alive through multiple economic downturns throughout the years including 2008-2009 recession and 2013-2014 depression; however recent renovations have given it some new life with more retail options such as office buildings across from it now giving it purpose beyond just being a mall again! Inflation also played an important role during this time as prices for goods went up while wages didn’t always stay consistent with inflationary rates! However over time these fluctuations faded away leaving Downtown as one of the most vibrant areas in town today! In 1907 when Lawrence was organized into districts there was great discussion about whether or not to move downtown; however after much deliberation (due largely due to financial concerns) Mayor Fenton decided that instead they should move everything out into what is now called “the Valley” area east of 6th Street between Hwy 509/National Avenue and Ninth Street where there would be more room for development without affecting existing neighborhoods or schools located near downtown at that time! This decision set off another period where redevelopment took place all around town until eventually everything centered around Sixth Street and National Avenue becoming known simply as “downtown” once again! Heavily populated areas like North Topeka south towards Wichita Falls were unaffected by this change although services gradually moved away from those locations until finally Fifth Street west of Main Avenue became residential streets only!. This change left behind large blocks bordered by Commercial Drive on one side and Seventh Street on the other allowing single family homes along each block form developing qualities unique unto themselves often times resulting in segregated neighborhoods even though they are no longer physically contiguous today 😕
Emporia was founded in 1854 by Elijah McCoy and his brother James. The town was named for the Emporia River, which flows through the town. The first post office was established in 1856. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Emporia from Kansas City. The railroad allowed for more trade and growth in the town. The population of Emporia grew from about 100 people in 1854 to 1,500 people by 1860. By 1870, the population had grown to 4,000 people. In 1893, a cotton gin was built in Emporia and became one of the largest cotton plants in America. The plant produced over 350 million pounds of cotton per year until it closed in 1898.
