In 1855, Emporia was organized as a town in Harrison County. On January 1, 1865, it became the city of Emporia. The population of the city was over 100,000 by 1900. In 1907, the Kansas Legislature designated the city's western edge as the limit for shopping districts in the state capital and renamed it "Kansas City." The eastern edge of the new shopping district was located in downtown Emporia. The area now known as Downtown Kansas City was first developed during World War II when military housing stock became available and people moved into what is now Midtown Kansas City to avoid being near Omaha Beach where Allied forces were landing during World War II.
