On July 1, 1907, Emporia became an independent city within Johnson County with a population of 5,554 residents according to the 1910 census With its growing economy and rapidly developing infrastructure projects such as Union Pacific Railroad mainline extension into town (now known as Marshalltown), Douglas Aircraft Company and other businesses soon followed suit bringing new life to what had once been just another small farming community west of Wichita Falls As weekday business hours shrunk during World War II due to German bombing raids over Kansa City limits; few people outside their residences ventured out during daylight hours despite opportunities for shopping or visiting local museums downtown In 1951-1952 an expanding dairy industry brought new jobs and residents began exodus from town towards newer suburbs such as Topeka but after several decades growth continued unabated with many new subdivisions developed throughout most portion now extending into east Douglas county In recent years there has been an increase in young families moving into established neighborhoods away from commercial areas for ease of Child Development Services access and close proximity to public transportation
