The Emporia Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1881. It was one of the first rifle clubs in the area, and it served as a model for other gun clubs throughout the years. The club continued to meet regularly until 1949, when it disbanded due to lack of membership.
Emporia, Kansas is a town in Cheyenne County, Kansas, United States. The population was 716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Amarillo, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Emporia was established on March 15, 1881. The present town site was laid out by Pierre A. Emporia and James Fenton in 1887. The name honor General George Armstrong Custer who died July 25, 1876 near Washita River in what is now Oklahoma Territory. The current community began to take form as a village when the first railroad reached it from Topeka on November 3, 1907. It became an incorporated town on December 12 of that year under the name of Emporia-Topeka Railway Station Village Incorporated". On May 14, 1908, a new courthouse and jail were dedicated with ceremonies led by then-Mayor John Meeks and First Lady Charlotte Beemer Meeks. In 1914 the population peaked at 1,845 but decreased to 1,362 by 1920 due to World War I and other factors such as Dust Bowl conditions which struck hardest in central Kansas during those years including wildfires that burned for weeks each summer killing livestock and destroying homes; much of which had been built using federal funding for rural housing construction programs known as " Bonus Bonds." !colspan=9 style="background:#FFFFFF;"|Total Population

Emporia, Kansas is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Shawnee County. In 1854, Emporia was founded as a town by wagon train passengers on the Santa Fe Trail. The first post office in Emporia was opened in 1855. The community grew rapidly and by 1860 it had a population of 10 people. In 1865, the U.S. Government erected Fort Scott to protect settlers from Native Americans and Indian Wars that were ongoing throughout Kansas at that time. The fort served as an important military center for many years until its closure in 1871 due to budget cuts within the U.S.–British war effort following the Mexican War (1846–48). In 1870, Emporia became a city under territorial jurisdiction of Lawrenceburg, Kansas after Lawrence was admitted as a state in 1867. By 1880, it had reached its peak with a population of 100 people and 114 businesses operating out of five blocks on Main Street alone! A railroad station was built at Main and Broadway in 1886 and served as the town's main commercial center until 1914 when KDKA-AM began broadcasting from Topeka which made Emporia an instantaneous entertainment destination for residents across western KS! The Great Depression hit Emporia hard with unemployment reaching 50% during 1932-1933! However through hard work and determination all citizens were able to overcome these challenges; even becoming leaders such as Mayor John Fenton who led efforts to bring electricity to homes during World War II! After World War II ended small businesses closed but new ones started up all over again due to emulation of KDKA-AM's success! Today there are more than 350 businesses operating out of downtown with more than 200 employees including many retail outlets as well !!!
Emporia was a railway town in Kansas that served as the gateway to the wheat country of central Kansas. The first train from Topeka reached Emporia on October 15, 1870, and the first post office was established in 1872. The town's population grew rapidly during the early years of Kansas' railroads, with many people coming to work on the new lines.
