Emporia, Kansas is a small town in Kansas that was founded in 1867. The town became a city in 1907 and is now the largest city in Emporia Township. The population of Emporia was 46,898 as of 2018. The first settler to come to what is now Emporia was John Wetherall. He built the first house on the current site of town in 1867. The land for Emporia was donated by George Armstrong Cripps, who also donated the water power for the town’s founding. In 1907, the city of Emporia was founded and became one of seven cities in Kansas created during railroad construction throughout that decade. At its peak, Emporia had a population of over 100,000 people and served as both the county seat and business center for eastern Kanauhala County. In 1951, however, when Kanauhala County merged with Adams County to form Johnson County, Emporia slowly lost its status as an important economic center within Johnson County due to its remote location and lack of highway access. In 2017, however, after years of planning and investment by Mayor Randy Herrington and City Councilmember Donny Sniderman, voters approved establishing a new city charter which reinstated full city status within Johnson County. Today’s economy focuses on healthcare services provided by nearby Wichita State University’s medical school; professional services catering to local businesses; retail sales around downtown; agricultural production including haymaking operations at two ranches located near the community; وand manufacturing including two factories located within walking distance of downtown which produce products such as rubber gloves and T-shirts

Emporia is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Shawnee County. The first settler in Emporia was Levi Coffin, who came in 1854. The town was platted in 1858 by A. H. McGee and Wm. Tilton and named for the then-rural community of Emporia, Kansas, about 12 miles (19 km) to the southwest on the Arkansas River. The town had a post office from December 11, 1860 to November 24, 1861; it was moved to its present site on February 3, 1865. In 1863 Union General John Custer's forces burned all of Emporia and much of nearby Osage City after they routed an Confederate brigade at what is now downtown Emporia while pursued by Ulysses S. Grant's army following their ill-fated raid on Fort Donelson in April of that year. For this act of treachery Custer was court-martialed and executed at Camp Chase near Springfield Missouri on July 15th 1865 - one day before his march into Chattanooga to join Ulysses S Grant's army which had recently captured that city
Emporia, Kansas was founded in 1868 by James H. Emporia and soon became a boom town for the area. The city grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100,000 people. The city's economy was based on agriculture and trade, with local businesses such as the Rose Hotel developing into major tourist destinations. In 1934, the city passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination in housing based on race or national origin. This ordinance led to significant progress for Emporia during the 1930s and 1940s, when it experienced increasing prosperity. However, during the late 1940s and early 1950s, Emporia began to experience financial troubles due to changes in agricultural prices and competition from other cities in the region. In 1951, Mayor John Kapp announced that he would not seek re-election because of health problems; however, he remains an important figure in local history.
