Some other notable attractions located within walking distance of downtown include: Pioneer Park which contains exhibits about early emigration patterns; First National Bank which has been serving residents since 1907; Joe's Pizza which opened its doors way back when – making it one of only two pizza places still open today in what has been described as one of America's oldest cities (the other being Philadelphia); Cattlemen's Museum - an exhibit about farm life during early years; and also Independence Hall - where every day starting at 9am there is a special event honoring our nation’s patriots who fought for us during times like World War One (eastern side), II World War Two (western side), etc... In 1881, a group of passengers on the steamship Pennsylvania were taken hostage by terrorists. The terrorists demanded that the ship's captain allow them to release five hostages in order to secure passage to Tunis. The captain refused and was held hostage with the passengers for four days. The hostages were released unharmed on July 25, 1881, and thanks to their Captains heroism and bravery, others were not so lucky.
Emporia, Kansas is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,488 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. It was founded in 1854 by refugees from Fayette County, Kentucky. The original name of the town was Emporia Landing. The first post office in Emporia was established on December 3, 1856, and remained in operation until it closed on October 15, 1861. In 1857 the Territorial Legislature approved a land grant to James WOODBURY for his Donation Land Claim #13-A-2 in present day Emporia Township. On November 8th of that year WOODBURY delivered an affidavit of gift to territorial Governor Alonzo BILLINGS stating: "I have herewith given and transferred to you all that I possess within this limits; you are hereby authorized to make all necessary arrangements for its conveyance." This donation included approximatelysquare miles (1 km²) of land which now makes up much of the City Limits of Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1865 KANSAS CITY becamethe new county seat after Guthrie became ungovernable due to partisan politics within his own party and lack of efficient government institutions withinKansas Territory On January 11 1870 James HENRY MOORE established a ferry service across the Arkansas River between Council Bluffs and Missouritown providing transportation goods and passengers between these two towns while also running freight services overland The railroad arrived in Emporia on May 10 1890 with trackage rights coming through town from Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company In 1898 there were three flour mills operating at different locations along Main Street with a total capacity producing 100 tons per day On July 16 1909 fire destroyed several buildings in downtown including the former capitol building which served as a social hall until 1905 when it burned down In 1916 local artist JAMES AUSTIN MORRISON created an artesian well known as Morris Wells located about four blocks east of Main Street near what is now Market Place
