On March 3rd an election resulted which showed that forty-one percent of the population were registered to vote; however only seventeen men voted because there were not enough ballots available from those who had already served two years in Congress as members of the House or Senators since Kansas became a U.S.–notably Daniel Webster and James Buchanan . The vote also showed Republican nominee Samuel Jourdan leading Democratic nominee David Davis by over fifty thousand votes out of more than one hundred thousand cast statewide – an indication that support for secessionist sentiment existed among some residents despite their lack of formal political power within Republic hearkening back to Jacksonian Americaa system where voting rights did not vest until after service as elected officials had expired or when they moved away from their original seat In early 1861 many residents also left because violence broke out between pro- Unionists and pro-slavery activists throughout much of central Missouri following Lincoln's decision to ordered all Confederate forces northward under General Sterling Price’s command rather than southward towards Cairo where most abolitionists resided Withdrawal from Missouri meant less opportunity for commerce and transportation so settlers began arriving here instead looking for land grants along Arkansas River which would offer easier access to irrigation systems developed by Northern farmers while still allowing hunting and fishing opportunities .
