Emporia, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Emporia County. The population was 41,026 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Kansas after Wichita. As of 2019, Emporia is ranked as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country by Forbes Magazine. The first Europeans to visit what is now Emporia were traders on their trading post at Fort Seville in 1795. In 1803, President James Ketchum signed a joint resolution naming Emporia as one of five townships within Osawatomie County for development into a town site by an act of Congress under then Governor John Evans. However, it did not take off due to lack of interest from settlers and support from local officials until 1821 when George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment arrived at Fort Riley and destroyed most of nearby buffalo herds while raiding Indian villages near present day Topeka. This event helped spur settlement and growth in what became known as "Custer's Township". In 1827, James Wahlgren donated land to build the first courthouse in what would become Emporia; construction began that year and finished two years later when it was opened by Governor John Evans with ceremonies led by General Winfield Scott himself. The cornerstone for this building was laid on November 8, 1830 by Eleazer Morse with Mayor Julius Cushing serving as honorary pallbearer. As late as 1875 there were only about 150 people living in downtown Emporia combined with scattered outposts around the county seat; however during that time new transportation methods such as railroads allowed more people and businesses to move into town which resulted in a rapid growth rate over ensuing decades culminating with a peak population size of nearly 30,000 according to 1880 census data By 1899 all indications indicated that heavy industry had replaced agriculture as the dominant economic force behind much emigration leaving townspeople struggling to keep up with rapidly expanding populations; however following World War I both textile mills (First National Bank Building being built 1925)and other large industrial establishments (Kern Gas Light Company plant 1915) boomed thanks partly to government largesse leading finally to a loss or abandonment of many small businesses across town prior to its rebirth following World War II via Interstate Highway 80 . A recent study has found that although joblessness rates have decreased since 2000 they are still high enough that many residents are leaving their homes for good despite efforts made by city leaders including passage last year of an ordinance designed specifically for attracting jobs back home Today’s downtown core offers eclectic mix including several dozen restaurants & cafes along Main Street between Seventh & Eighth Streets., numerous art galleries (& boutiques), four movie theaters (including Regal Cinemas), three golf courses – all municipal properties – plus six blocks containing over 100 retail stores including Macy’s department store chain - making it easily one of America’s most vibrant shopping communities

Emporia was one of the first communities in Kansas to be established on the new Wichita– Topeka railroad line and it quickly became an important agricultural center with many large-scale productions such as wheat, corn, soybeans and dairy products. In the 1960s and 1970s, Emporia experienced growth as a result of its role as an education and technology hub for central Kansas.
Emporia was founded by a group of farmers in 1854. The town was named for the English word "emporium," meaning an online store. In 1861, the United States acquired Kansas from Mexico and renamed it toingovernor of Kansas. The name change reflected the country's admission into the Union as a new nation.
