Emporia was founded in 1867 by Major John W. Emporia and his brother, Lt. Colonel Samuel Emporia. The city was named after the two brothers, who were also its first mayors. In 1915, the Kansas legislature designated the city as the capital of the new state of Kansas. The city has been moved twice since then: to Topeka in 1907 and to Wichita in 1904. The history of Emporia begins with Major John W. Emporia’s arrival from Illinois in 1867 on an exploratory mission to find a new home for himself and his family. He soon realized that he had found what he was looking for – a thriving community with easy access to land and good water resources, just across the Missouri River from Kansas City! In 1875, Major John W. Emporia donated 1,500 acres (620 hectares) of land east of present-day downtown Emporia to start a town square that would serve as a center for commerce and education within the new community. This project became known as “the Square” because it served as both a public square where citizens could meet to discuss business concerns and an educational institution where they could learn about local geography and history. By 1900, over 100 businesses had been established in downtown Emporia thanks to the hard work of Mayor Jules Gossett and his team! The early years of this decade were difficult for many reasons including World War I which destroyed much property throughout Wichita; however, by 1922 Downtown Emporia had recovered sufficiently so that Gossett successfully ran for re-election again that year on an issue platform focused on creating jobs opportunities in Downtown/Downtown Square! During World War II, much property within Downtown/Downtown Square was used as military barracks providing employment for area residents during wartime; however due to wartime restrictions on civilian housing development only two small blocks within these boundaries remain today – bounded by First Street on one side & Elm Street on another! This block is currently occupied by Pawnee Park which opened its doors in 1993! The success stories attributed to downtown/downtown square during these years include: KFC which relocated from Oak Cliff into downtown/Downtown Square due primarily to lack of space elsewhere; The Kipling Center which began operations in 1925 as one of the first all-purpose movie theaters west of Broadway; Stroud Glass Company which started manufacturing window glass near Main Street; Radio Corporation Of America (RCA) whose Tulsa TV station KCRA aired programming out of downtown/Downtown Square until it relocated permanently into their current building at 4th & Vine Streets in 1957; Coca Cola's parent company PepsiCo arrived in town via Interstate 65 opposite Main Street just before Christmas 1956 when their truck stopped overnight while traveling southbound on I-65 between Kansas City & Wichita;; And finally Hennigan’s Drug Store which opened its doors just northward along First Street near Olive Branch Creek priorto being razed following tornado damage three years later…allowing storefronts located immediately adjacent thereto uninterrupted use until 1985 when demolition commenced…. All told nearly eighty structures have been preserved or renovated through various incarnations including conversion into apartments, condos or singlefamily homes resulting in more than 2 million sq ft (205 hectares) being rehabilitated or restoredanquadrille pattern around central core….. Today there are few places outside metropolitan areas that can compare favorably with what exists inside Municipal District #1 within Douglas County
