Dodge City, Kansas is a town located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census, down from 7,362 at the 2000 census. Dodge City is one of seven cities in Topeka County and the county seat of Topeka County. The first permanent settler in what would become Dodge City was James Weirick on May 20th 1847. He named his land "Wichita". When Wichita was laid out by Territorial Surveyor Amos Nash in 1851 it became part of present-day Topeka County. In 1853 there were 10 settlers living in Wichita; however by 1860 only 2 remained and 1 had died since its settlement date. In 1861 Wichita's peak population occurred when over 25 residents lived there; however by 1870 that number had decreased to 6 due to an increased demand for goods brought overland from Kansas Territory during the Civil War and Reconstruction period. In 1871 Wichita voters passed a resolution requesting that the territorial government annex their city as a municipal unit within Topeka County because they felt it necessary for overall economic development within their community%. On October 12th of that year an act annexing Wichita as a municipality was approved by territorial officials and came into effect on November 4th; however due to financial difficulties caused by low commodity prices local leaders decided not to pursue full incorporation until later that year when better times offered more potential for growth Dodge City experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a municipality; according to United States Census Bureau estimates from 1880 through 1990 the city's population increased from 3,722 to 7,362 while its area tripled (from .91 square miles to .96 square miles). During this time Dodge City experienced significant housing developments including two high-rise buildings completed in 1898: One called "The People's Palace" was located on Texas Street between First and Second Streets while another known as "The State Capitol" occupied Fourth Street between Broadway and Congress Avenue NW which is now home to Hutchinson Community College This rapid growth led some residents to nickname their city "The Gilded Age Capital of America". However after 1907 when real estate values began falling due largely to new synthetic oil products Checkered Flag Land Company merged with other developers culminating with World's Fair mega-project plans being cancelled leaving downtown DodgeCity with little hope for redevelopment or commercial activity absent outside investments On December 3rd 1907 Mayor Wm Dickey proposed annexation of neighboring Pittsburg which also failed due lack of support although this event helped spark off Diskin Heights Association Development Corporation Plans For A New downtown District That Would Include All 5 Of The original Cities Within Topeka Countys boundaries Which Eventually Became Downtown DodgeCity But Ended Up Infuriating Most Residents Who Wanted Their Mayor To Do Something About It punk rock band Garbage played three shows at The State Capitol late night before demolition started February 15th 2008
