Dodge City, Kansas was the birthplace of the first practical and effective self-loading shotgun, the 1881 Winchester Model 1885. The town's gunsmiths developed this weapon to help defend settlers in what is now western Kansas against Comanche and Kiowa Indians. This revolver-style shotgun quickly became popular for its ability to kill game at long distances and was soon adopted by American Indian tribes as well. In 1886, a Dodge City gunsmith named George Hennepin patented a design for an eye protection device that he called the "Hennepin Protector." This device consisted of a metal frame with two lenses on either side of an eyeglass hinge that could be opened or closed to protect the user's eyes from shot fragments. The protector was initially marketed as a safety measure for farmers who were using shotguns in their fields.
