Dodge City, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Dodge County. The population was 24,755 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The name "Dodge" comes from General Hugh Dodge's 1847 purchase of land near what is now downtown Wichita for $4,500. Dodge served as mayor and judge from 1875 to 1903 and as governor from 1907 to 1911. His daughter Clara Dodge married John Wickersham, one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and founders of Wickersham-Haley Glass Company in Wichita. The first knife made in Dodge City was a crude affair fashioned from an old hoe handle and a piece of wood that had been sharpened into a point. From then until 1907, it was an unincorporated community located east of present-day Wichita Falls on a railroad alignment that ran between Wichita and Topeka. In 1907, the city incorporated as a municipal corporation under the name "Dodge City" with a population of 653 residents. In 1916, after World War I ended and new legislation gave cities wide latitude to form governments without state interference, Dodge City voters approved incorporation as a municipality with a population of 12,000 people – making it one of the largest cities in Kansas at that time. During prohibition years (1915-1920), various businesses within town conducted business either openly or through other means such as bootlegging or black marketeering operations; however only two arrests were made during this time period for operating under an illegal liquor license - both incidents took place outside of town limits by deputies working for Hutchinson County sheriff John Dickson

The Dodge City Territorial Legislature met in the old Territorial Building and passed a resolution creating Dodge City as an official city. The first mayor of Dodge City was John A. Richardson and the first recorder was John H. Dunnigan. Many important people from Dodge City went on to become prominent members of their community during its early years. Dodge City quickly became known for its cattle drives and wheat production. It also became a center of trade and commerce with other towns in Kansas Territory. In 1892, the town erected a new courthouse which served as its interim Judicial Court until a new building could be built downtown. The town also developed a comprehensive water system that allowed for easy irrigation of crops and orchards throughout the area. The late 1800s saw significant growth in Wichita, Kansas due to rapid population growth across Kansas Territory as well as immigrants originating from all over Europe who arrived in search of opportunity in America's growing economy . In 1907, Wichita incorporated as an independent city and began to build up its own infrastructure such as public schools and fire stations . This growth led to some tension between Wichita and Dodge City over municipal rights and services . However, these differences slowly dissipated over time . In 1908, Wichita annexed parts of working-class northside Tulsa into its boundaries while DodgeCity continued to grow westward , annexing more territory along the way until it reached what is now Main Street ( east side ) near Topeka Avenue (west side) in 1914 where it terminated
