Dodge City was founded in 1867 as the town of Emporia, Kansas. It became a city in 1907 and then a Dodge City Municipal District in 1950. The population of Dodge City increased from around 7,500 in 1880 to over 20,000 by 1930. There were gun ranges and shooting contests both on and off the property where people could engage in target shooting. The first organized targets competition took place on October 10, 1882 at the Buffalo Bill Showgrounds. The event was won by George Biddle who shot three rounds out of ten shots at a five-foot diameter target made of jute with an Olive drab background. A second competition was held two years later and this time it was won by Jno Haggerty who hit all but one round out of twelve shots at fifteen feet using his Colt Single Action Army revolver. In 1886, John Moses Browning wrote about Targetshooting events he had attended when living in Topeka: "At these shoots I enjoyed great excitement among my friends because they contributed largely to my proficiency." Joe Eppley also enjoyed these types of competitions as did many othershooters during the early 19th century. These type contests helped promote rifle shooting as an amateur sport within America while also teaching young people how to shoot accurately and safely
