Derby, Kansas is a city of approximately 100,000 people located in the eastern part of the state of Kansas. It is bordered by Wichita to the north, Topeka to the east, and Shawnee to the south. Derby lies on the Arkansas River just upstream from its confluence with the Blue River. The population was 103,185 as of 2010. Derby was founded in 1852 as a small trading post by J.C. Hensley and others on land that now forms part of Topeka. In 1862 it became a county seat and in 1868 became an incorporated town when all of Hutchinson County was merged into what is now Derby County. The first weapon flashlight was made here in 1865 by George Ellington and J.L. Hefferty from a pair of crude oil lamps powered by burning Indian gum supplied by local merchants Charles Aiken and Wm Ladds Jr.. Derby, Kansas is a small village located in the eastcentral United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. Derby is a part of Johnson County and it lies on the eastern edge of the Great Plains region. According to the USGS, Derby has an elevation of 693 feet (205 m). The first settler in what would be Derby was James Milliken, who arrived in 1847. In 1848, Byron and his brother-in-law John Sibley settled in what is now Derby. They named their new settlement after their father-in-law's home town of Leeds in England. By 1860, there were 20 settlers living in Derby. In 1861, post office officials decided that the name "Derby" should be anglicized to "Dresden". On December 12th of that year, one hundred dollars was offered for a flagstaff from which to fly the American flag at Derby courthouse. The successful bidder received a pole with two ensigns affixed thereto by Mr. Wickersham - one blue and one red - both indicating that Dresdingen had become Denmarkville during its early days as a small town on the prairies west of Omaha City proper! The first store opened up in Dresden on October 15th 1861 by William Sibley and his wife Anna Storer. It was built near where Pawnee Avenue meets Dresden Road today. A post office called Dresden was established on November 1st, 1861; it remained open until May 2nd 1865 when it became known as Yorkville because mail service moved to Yorktown rather than continue through Dresden due to construction work just north of town along present day Illinois Route 506 (now Interstate 24).

In 1881, Derby became a station on the Union Pacific Railroad and until May 1st of that year it functioned as an unstaffed stop on their main line between Topeka and Wichita Falls. On that date, a local David Ladd official noted "The depot has been closed for several years being used as stable yard by farmers." In 1907, during construction of the Wichita-Lawrence metropolitan area (later called Wichita), part of what is now Derby was included in that area and its population increased from 2 to 3 hundred people over just two years! In 1924, when Wichita annexed all but one square mile of northeastern Kansas (including nearby Decatur), derby lost its status as an unincorporated community within Lawrence County and became part of Wichita Metropolitan Area; however it retains its ZIP code (62001). The current building at 11th & Sheridan Avenue dates back to 1920 when Retired Judge John Fenton bought property there which he turned into a retirement home for judges across America with Vista del Rio Oaks clubhouse next door serving as their headquarters while they toured America giving judicial presentations throughout each state/region they visited before retiring there permanently around 1970 or 1980 - this view can still be seen today from 11th Ave east to Sheridan St., looking out over Topeka's Riverside Park!
Derby was founded in 1854 as a town in Clay County, Kansas. It was renamed Derby in 1883 after the Baron German von der Spee family donated land for the town. The population of Derby peaked at 1,500 in 1907 and declined to fewer than 100 by 1930.
