Another important aspect of derby’s history includes its role as home to several rodeo events annually including The Cowboy Open Championship (CWC) which takes place each July at Fair Grounds Park across from town hall; The Haskell Invitational Horse Race (HIGH), also known as “The beauty pageant” due to its highly anticipated outcome; and The Kiowa Nations Roundup Rodeo which takes place annually adjacent to state fairgrounds just outside town limits on Saturday nights around Memorial Day weekend near where many local businesses situated along I-435 once stood before being razed for development over time frame spanning more than three decades starting with what would later become known as Keystone Mall redevelopment project beginning approximately 1965 thru circa 1985 inclusive culminating with demolition/overhauling/present day use as current day Walmart Supercenter location about 2015 +/-

The park that now exists dates back to 1924 when a group of citizens purchased 153 acres (60 ha) bordering west on Topeka Street from Harry Aiken for $4 per acre (1 sq mi). They used this land to build what is now known as Topeka Park Elementary School and Middle School; High School #2 followed in 1931 and #3 in 1935. Today’s buildings date back to this time including many original classrooms from Topeka Park Elementary School and Middle School which are still used today as administrative buildings for schools within Wichita City boundaries
