Derby, Kansas is a city of over 100,000 people in the U.S. state of Kansas. It is the county seat of Wichita County and has a population of 235,898 as of 2010. The city was founded in 1873 by merchants from Topeka and other nearby towns when the Santa Fe Trail was completed. Derby became an important transportation center on the Santa Fe Trail because it had a rail yard and formed part of the route between Topeka and Wichita. Derby, Kansas is a town located in the U.S. state of Kansas, about 25 miles east of Wichita and 27 miles west of Topeka. The population was 1,459 as of the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Shawnee County seat and is within the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers to what would become Derby arrived in 1854 from Tennessee via wagon train. They were followed by other pioneers who arrived over the course of the next few years. A post office was established at Derby in 1857 and became an important community center for county residents because it served as a stopping point on stagecoaches traveling between Wichita and Topeka. The first store in Derby was built on Main Street in 1869 by Wm. Hargrave and later operated by Elijah Holmes until it burned down in 1907. The first school was opened in 1865 by Drury Rucker with twelve students enrollment which continued until 1889 when it became part of Topeka High School). In 1893, local merchants formed a group to promote farming communities throughout Shawnee County combined with engineering assistance from US Steel founder Andrew Carnegie to form the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station (KASES) which would become one of the most significant Agricultural Experiment Stations in American history serving more than 2,000 farmers across seventeen states during its tenure from 1923-1947 inclusive.) KASES played a critical role during World War II providing research support for development of new agricultural technology including chemical weapons use; this work resulted in numerous advances that helped farmers around the world achieve success during that war.(Please see: History Of Derbyshire , KASES website .) In 1947, following legislative passage establishing Shawnee County as an independent city, Derby's municipal charter was revoked making it an unincorporated community again.) Today, derby remains a thriving community with active businesses including a bank (JPMorgan Chase), law enforcement/security services (Sheriff’s Office), two churches (First Baptist Church & Emmanuel Lutheran Church), several restaurants/bars/cafes/convenience stores/, several schools including Topeka High School And Shawnee Intermediate School., two parks (), four water towers (), three golf courses ().
