In 1927–28, Chester Kapp opened what would become one of America's first drive-in cinemas serving ice cream cones from his car lot; kapps had been selling soft drinks since 1905 as part of his business venture called "Kansas City Soda Fountain" (nowKOA). A new fire station was built adjacent to the old fire hall between 1929 and 1931; this served as both a training facility for firefighters and an interim jail until construction could begin on an actual jail building which finally opened in 1933 . During prohibition years many businesses closed due to lack of customers or competition from legal alcohol sales outlets; however, derby's two cotton gins kept operating until 1951 when they ceased operations completely due to state regulations prohibiting discrimination against citizens based on race or national origin at retail stores such as liquor stores%.
