Derby, Kansas is a town in Osborne County, Kansas, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Wichita– Newton, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in this area were James and Nancy North who located a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1868. The town was laid out by developer J.C. Ladd and named for Derby, England where he had been born in 1837. A post office was established in 1870, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1913. In 1902 the railroads came through this area and built two tracks parallel to each other north of town near what is now Midland Elementary School; so much for Derby's sleepy reputation as a small agricultural community surrounded by farmland! The railroad brought with it more people (and their animals) than could be accommodated within town limits so new development sprang up all around the original nucleus: an immense cotton gin (1892), five stores/cafés (1913), three schools (1927-1974), a movie theater (1948) and numerous churches including one which became home to both the local Red Cross ambulance service and later tornado insurance servicesqv – all within easy walking distance of one another! By 1930 there were over 100 businesses employing over 1,000 residents; but alas things began to unravel when World War II caused many jobs to move overseas or be replaced by machines; not that it stopped everyone from spending their weekends playing golf or going fishing – just as they always have done! One interesting note about derby during these years was that although most people spoke only English at home, they would also talk to their friends back in England using what they called “Derbyisms” which included various expressions common among English speakers such as "that'll do" or "how are you?" In fact some locals even started teaching themselves English while living here – something that continues today even though many of these elderly residents can no longer speak proper language! All told there have been several major changes occurin derby since its incorporation into city limits on January 1st 1959….Some highlights include: becoming an annexe of Wichita on October 26th 1965 after being annexed by Newton; more than doubling its population due to growth along I-70 corridor adjacent thereto beginning in 1970; reaching its current size after years of planning highlighting potential annexation into surrounding townships; becoming ground zero for large scale redevelopment occurring throughout Osborne County following oilakiing strike & ensuing recessionvi… finally experiencing significant population decline following controversial rezoning efforts enacted during recent mayoral electionvii resulting in dwindling retail & commercial opportunities as well as high levels of poverty& crimeiii Derby's history goes back before 1860 when James North settled hereabouts with his family. They platted this land east of present day Midland Elementary School on November 15th 1861 under the name Post Office Township No 4 according to USGS map data available online at http://www2.gpoaccess.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc?db=historicalmap&item=oest569a&seqno=1 ). George Waddell surveyed this area grant dated April 1865 which shows lots still unplatted at that time…..the post office building still stands today across from Midland Elementary School……..This township probably functioned primarily as an agricultural society with cornfields stretching southward from where Mr. North's house now stands……….By 1870 most buildings were either wooden structures or Frame houses………. derby renamed itself Derby Junction Railroad Station District On December 12th 1870 because multiple trains coming thru here made a stop…………….. By 1907 there were 3 stores & 2 cafes……………. One interesting note about our past is that we retain nearly all our Germanic words despite having grown up speaking English………..
